§ 040 · Questions

Questions about planting in Massachusetts

When is the last frost in Massachusetts?

On average from about April 4 in Boston to May 3 in Springfield. Frost is over 9 years in 10 by May 1 to May 28.

When can I plant tomatoes in Massachusetts?

The extension service lists May to June. Tomatoes are frost-tender, so Ezina dates them from about April 18 in Boston. If frost is in the forecast, wait until it passes.

Is it too late for a fall garden?

The latest fall windows on the calendar close in August. Filter by Fall above to see what is still open.

Why not use my USDA zone?

A zone is the coldest winter night, not a frost date. These dates come from NOAA station records and the extension service.

Can Ezina date plantings for my address?

Yes. Run Ezina Dig on your address and your bed plans are dated from that site's own frost records, on iPhone and Android in the contiguous U.S.
